Living My Life As A Jazz Solo
Living My Life As A Jazz Solo - Poetry single video From the album & Book: JUJU JAZZ POETICS Written & Produced by Plunky www.plunkyone.com Photos by Robert Adamo and Patrick Mamou Living My Life As A Jazz Solo 1. I Am Streams and Screams and recurring themes / I riff by cutting and pasting strands of intertwined melodies that spiral like ribbons of DNA / combined in a unique way to be me and my songs. I am inherited recurring themes reminders of where we’ve been and where we’re going and by all means / Making time, or taking mine out of the quiet spots / surrounded by the hotspots / while being so cool. My diatonic scales come in waves of be-bop and the waves never stop. They could become a drone of the ordinary, but like Bird / my every ebbing tide is potentially the last word depending on how and when I’m heard. 2. Living my life as a jazz solo, I learned to fly. I learned to fly by riding a pendulum between two rhythms like on a trapeze swinging with ease / between the pre- known and the now I see / swinging over beats like 1, 2, 3 / pushed, no pulled back to the future and ahead to the past / between tradition and newness, from the roots up through the grass / to the highs and sighs of the leaves on trees blowing in the breeze. 3. I am recurring themes / and melodies created out of impulses and dreams / and reflections / like when I look through the window out on to the sea, and see, at the same time, the reflection of the scene behind me / in the room and, at the same time, be aware of the glass itself and at the same time, see myself with three eyes. This is a set of viewpoints that expose a set of new points, new perspectives that cannot be re-covered, that unlike a jack-in-the-box cannot be put back in the box, that cannot be un-seen and forgotten because, having once been a genie and knowing one’s potential, it is impossible to not be. 4. Like a jazz solo I am different grooves at different tempos harmonized / restructured and inverted like you never heard it / smoothly hip / when I downshift into a mellow dip / non-rushed and un-paused / firmly rooted in the cause educated in the rules/ schooled in being cool / and self-taught in views found in the baptismal pool / full-bodied, deep toned and getting deeper still / self-confident with a super strong will / I be styling and profiling / quoting great lines and stimulating great minds / on a roll and blowing down I be throwing / while spiraling ever upwards till I’m free / Free / as Ornette/ Free / as bird / Free / as the wind Free / as fire / Free/ as I dream / as I stream! As I beam! AS I Scream! AS I Scream! AS I Scream! My recurring themes... Living my life as a jazz solo… - J. PLUNKY BRANCH

The Black Fire Documentary Trailer
Here is the 1:20 trailer for the Black Fire Documentary film. The Black Fire Documentary uncovers Washington, DC’s music and its cultural heritage by highlighting the documents, images, photographs, art, video footage, music and the people behind Black Fire Records. Through the use of primary and secondary research methods, in-person interviews, and archival and media footage and photography, the documentary shines light on a Black-owned independent jazz record label started in Chocolate City, aka the nation’s capital in the 1970’s. Established by DJ and record producer Jimmy Gray, and Saxophonist James “Plunky” Branch who led the band Oneness Of Juju, Black Fire Records followed in the footsteps of other influential black-owned independent labels like Strata-East and Tribe. The Black Fire Documentary talks with icons of the Black Fire family like Plunky, Asante, and Sugar Bear of Experience Unlimited (E.U.) as well as a cast of historians, radio hosts and musicians from D.C. The Black Fire Documentary is a story about the Spiritual Jazz Movement through highlighting Plunky's contemporaries such as Sun ra. The Black Fire Documentary is also about the Black Cultural Movements of the time, specifically in DC, but also in California and New York. The Black Fire Documentary is a story about an independent jazz label and its connections to modern music through Hip Hop & Neo-Soul; via artists that sampled or were influenced by Plunky/Black Fire (J Dilla, Madlib, The Roots, Questlove, Big Pun, KRS ONE etc.). Finally, the Black Fire Documentary is a story about Family / Legacy and how Jamiah Branch and Jamal Gray carry on the lineage of Black Fire Records.

Plunky BLACKNESS (Official Video)
Artist: Plunky Song Title: "Blackness" Album: Juju Jazz Poetics Label N.A.M.E. Brand Records Produced by J. Plunky Branch Video Directed by Danja Mowf Music written by J Plunky Branch & Jamal Gray Graphic Design: Pun Anderson Photos by: Dennis Harvey, J. Punky Branch, Storyblocks BLACKNESS There is so much to like about Blackness. And as Plunky says in the official video for “Blackness,” “Everybody likes something… Black” There is much to consider provocative and confirming in “Blackness,” Plunky’s poem and song from the JUJU JAZZ POETICS book and album. In the music video produced by DJ Danja Mowf, saxophonist Plunky is blowing and flowing. For much of the screen time, the musician is most prominently projected as the OG, an elder, a griot spitting rhymes, dropping knowledge and reciting history. The images in the video evoke visions of the past, present and future in a montage of ordinary black folks in ordinary situations, punctuated by an occasional iconic photo of an Obama or Nkrumah to spice up the flow. Blackness is entertaining and thought-provoking. The music for the song was composed by Plunky and Jamal Gray, and the funky audio track was produced by Jamiah Fire Branch. For the video, the ever-creative producer Mowf synchs the music with sequences photos by Dennis Harvey, Plunky and Story Blocks to create excitement and gravitas. The official release date for the video is July 20, 2022; Plunky’s 75th birthday. When his lyric says “I am this, I am that, You can’t miss that I am Black” he is obviously talking about himself personally, but he is also talking about every Black person everywhere. I'll Be There - Official Video
"I'll Be There" (Official release date: 6.10.23 on all platforms) Artist: Plunky & Oneness Written by Plunky, Diallo & Fire Produced by J Plunky Branch Video by Fire Shot on location in Montego Bay, Jamaica Plunky & Oneness Branch Out in New Reggae Direction on Latest Single, “I’ll Be There” Richmond, VA - Plunky & Oneness, the Afro-funk jazz group known for their eclecticism and genre-busting explorations, are set to release their latest single, “I’ll Be There,” on June 10, 2023, on N.A.M.E. Brand Records. The new single marks a departure from their usual sound, with a reggae-influenced R&B track that showcases Plunky’s heartfelt vocals and emotional lyrics. “I’ll Be There” is a song about loyalty and fidelity, with a lover pledging their devotion to their long-term partner. Plunky composed the melody and lyrics over a drill rhythm track produced by his son, Fire, and DJ Diallo. The sparse, dub-reggae rhythm track spotlights the song’s poignant message and soulful performance by Plunky and his background singers. The accompanying music video, shot on location in Montego Bay, Jamaica, features breathtaking footage of the tropical setting and creates a wistful setting for the lover’s pledging declaration. The video was shot and edited by Plunky and Fire. DJ Papa D, MC and music director of Dub Party FM Radio in Jamaica, has already been playing preliminary mixes of the track on his radio show, receiving tremendous responses from his listeners. Plunky said, “The feedback from Papa D and his audience has been encouraging and validates the vibrancy of the track and the universal sentiment of the song.” Plunky has been at the forefront of Afro-centric jazz, funk, and go-go for over 50 years. He has woven these interrelated musical forms into a forward-looking message of empowerment, positivity, and cultural awareness. Plunky and Oneness of Juju's landmark African Rhythms album was released in 1975 on the pioneering D.C.-based indie label Black Fire. Plunky's band found itself able to move with the times, scoring early '80s house/disco hits and touring in both Europe and Africa. In recent years, Plunky has recorded in an urban/contemporary vein. “These days I am still producing a wide variety of songs in various genres, from experimental cosmic jazz to Afro-beats to R&B funk to smooth instrumentals and hip-hop. So, while we’re doing a few reggae joints, I can’t say that this represents a whole new, singular direction for us,” Plunky said. “I’ll Be There” is sure to be a standout addition to Plunky & Oneness' extensive catalog, showcasing their continued growth and experimentation as artists.
