Love Makes Us Better
Plunky's "Love Makes Us Better" is Cosmic Jazz Funk In his “Love Makes Us Better” video Plunky imagines John Coltrane or Pharaoh Sanders getting funky and spiritual and political in today’s Youtube musical landscape. The new song by Plunky & Oneness, “Love makes us better” is a declarative statement of belief in the power of universal love. Written by acclaimed saxophonist J. Plunky Branch, the song expresses his personal belief in love as a positive force in human nature. It turns out the man with the horn is also a man with a vision, as Plunky directed and produced this short-form video masterwork that explores the intersection of musical romanticism and political and social idealism. The message in the video is simple: love makes us better people and a better nation. The mood and tonality of the song’s instrumental track is definitely rooted in the cosmic jazz of the 1960s and 70s. During that era, Plunky worked with Ornette Coleman, Sam Rivers, Pharaoh Sanders, Rashid Ali, Lonnie Liston Smith, Ndikho Xaba and others while leading his group, Juju. Plunky produced two albums on innovative jazz label Strata-East Records and two albums on Black Fire Records before establishing his own N.A.M.E. Brand Records label. Over the years Plunky & Oneness (of Juju) developed an Afro-jazz funk sound by combining soulful, polyrhythmic and improvisational styles. On “Love Makes Us Better,” Plunky evokes the sentiments of past cosmic jazz saxophone masters, as his soprano soars over the rhythm section guided by Dr. Weldon Hill’s grand piano motif. Hip-hop producer J. Fire Branch’s beats and funky drums propel the track into today’s future tense. Plunky’s raw lead vocals are smoothed by angelic background singers (Charlayne Green and Kala Page) as he delivers his simple but poignant lyrics: "Love is supernatural and satisfactual Magnificent, excellent and heaven sent Personal love. Universal love. It’s all about love Love makes things better/Better and better Love makes us better/Better and better" Plunky is a persistently innovative and versatile artist whose 25 albums and 450 original songs span multiple genres including, African, jazz, funk, R&B, hip-hop and reggae. He has toured extensively with his group, Plunky & Oneness (of Juju), performing in concert and at festivals with some of the biggest names in Black music, including George Clinton, Earth Wind & Fire, Patti LaBelle, LL Cool J, Lonnie Liston Smith, and so many more. Plunky recently received a 50 For 50 Award as an outstanding artist of the last 50 years from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. His songs have been on national and international charts, licensed for television, sampled, re-recorded and re-issued on numerous international compilations. “Love Makes Us Better” will be the title song of the upcoming full-length album due out later this summer, but the song is available now as one of the tracks on “Only You,” Plunky’s four-song maxi-single CD which this week entered the Smoothjazz.com Top 50 Indie Chart. The “Only You” maxi single is available on itunes, amazon and all the usual online streaming services; and it can be ordered at https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/plunkyoneness8

Plunky BLACKNESS (Official Video)
Artist: Plunky Song Title: "Blackness" Album: Juju Jazz Poetics Label N.A.M.E. Brand Records Produced by J. Plunky Branch Video Directed by Danja Mowf Music written by J Plunky Branch & Jamal Gray Graphic Design: Pun Anderson Photos by: Dennis Harvey, J. Punky Branch, Storyblocks BLACKNESS There is so much to like about Blackness. And as Plunky says in the official video for “Blackness,” “Everybody likes something… Black” There is much to consider provocative and confirming in “Blackness,” Plunky’s poem and song from the JUJU JAZZ POETICS book and album. In the music video produced by DJ Danja Mowf, saxophonist Plunky is blowing and flowing. For much of the screen time, the musician is most prominently projected as the OG, an elder, a griot spitting rhymes, dropping knowledge and reciting history. The images in the video evoke visions of the past, present and future in a montage of ordinary black folks in ordinary situations, punctuated by an occasional iconic photo of an Obama or Nkrumah to spice up the flow. Blackness is entertaining and thought-provoking. The music for the song was composed by Plunky and Jamal Gray, and the funky audio track was produced by Jamiah Fire Branch. For the video, the ever-creative producer Mowf synchs the music with sequences photos by Dennis Harvey, Plunky and Story Blocks to create excitement and gravitas. The official release date for the video is July 20, 2022; Plunky’s 75th birthday. When his lyric says “I am this, I am that, You can’t miss that I am Black” he is obviously talking about himself personally, but he is also talking about every Black person everywhere. I'll Be There - Official Video
"I'll Be There" (Official release date: 6.10.23 on all platforms) Artist: Plunky & Oneness Written by Plunky, Diallo & Fire Produced by J Plunky Branch Video by Fire Shot on location in Montego Bay, Jamaica Plunky & Oneness Branch Out in New Reggae Direction on Latest Single, “I’ll Be There” Richmond, VA - Plunky & Oneness, the Afro-funk jazz group known for their eclecticism and genre-busting explorations, are set to release their latest single, “I’ll Be There,” on June 10, 2023, on N.A.M.E. Brand Records. The new single marks a departure from their usual sound, with a reggae-influenced R&B track that showcases Plunky’s heartfelt vocals and emotional lyrics. “I’ll Be There” is a song about loyalty and fidelity, with a lover pledging their devotion to their long-term partner. Plunky composed the melody and lyrics over a drill rhythm track produced by his son, Fire, and DJ Diallo. The sparse, dub-reggae rhythm track spotlights the song’s poignant message and soulful performance by Plunky and his background singers. The accompanying music video, shot on location in Montego Bay, Jamaica, features breathtaking footage of the tropical setting and creates a wistful setting for the lover’s pledging declaration. The video was shot and edited by Plunky and Fire. DJ Papa D, MC and music director of Dub Party FM Radio in Jamaica, has already been playing preliminary mixes of the track on his radio show, receiving tremendous responses from his listeners. Plunky said, “The feedback from Papa D and his audience has been encouraging and validates the vibrancy of the track and the universal sentiment of the song.” Plunky has been at the forefront of Afro-centric jazz, funk, and go-go for over 50 years. He has woven these interrelated musical forms into a forward-looking message of empowerment, positivity, and cultural awareness. Plunky and Oneness of Juju's landmark African Rhythms album was released in 1975 on the pioneering D.C.-based indie label Black Fire. Plunky's band found itself able to move with the times, scoring early '80s house/disco hits and touring in both Europe and Africa. In recent years, Plunky has recorded in an urban/contemporary vein. “These days I am still producing a wide variety of songs in various genres, from experimental cosmic jazz to Afro-beats to R&B funk to smooth instrumentals and hip-hop. So, while we’re doing a few reggae joints, I can’t say that this represents a whole new, singular direction for us,” Plunky said. “I’ll Be There” is sure to be a standout addition to Plunky & Oneness' extensive catalog, showcasing their continued growth and experimentation as artists.
